NMA 2021 Newsletter
Happy New Year from all of us at the Nebraska Mortgage Association!
What a year 2020 turned out to be. I’m sure you’re all reflecting on the amazing, challenging, unprecedented year 2020 was and wondering, what lies ahead in 2021? I’m optimistic.
According to the MBA, rates will remain low throughout 2021. Purchase origination volume is expected to rise. Unemployment is down from 13% in Q2 of 2020 to 6.7%, and projected to drop to 5% by the end of 2021. Vaccines are being distributed. Our industry has not only survived 2020 but thrived in spite of tremendous challenges. I’m certain many production records were broken and we will have a LOT of champion circle winners this year! We have much to look forward to in 2021.
Speaking of a challenging 2020, I want to thank our now past-president Becky Sandiland for her leadership and perseverance last year. While managing her personal production, she spearheaded our first ever "virtual" fall conference -- plus a successful golf tournament during the summer -- and helped provide leadership that kept our membership numbers and financial stability in place.
We are seeking volunteers for committees, including Programs, Membership, Government Relations, Member Events and Communications/Social Media. If you’d like to get involved, please reach out to myself or Executive Director Joe Pittman for additional information. You can reach Joe at [email protected] or 402-881-6467 cell. My e-mail is [email protected] and my phone is 402-939-3783.
As a board, we are working to bring you more value 2021 including additional training opportunities and hopefully more in person, live events. Already for Q1 we have two virtual, free training opportunities for you! CLICK HERE for more information.
May 2021 bring us continued profitable volume, good health, and live in-person events!

Happy New Year and welcome to 2021! I am honored and humbled to complete my term as the 2020 Nebraska Mortgage Association president. As with so many things in 2020, it is fair to say that my term did not go as I had planned. Regardless, there were many successes and I believe 2021 will be even better.
As I reflect on 2020, I want to acknowledge the heartache and pain felt in our lives as a result of COVID 19. It is likely that we can all say we know someone this nasty disease has taken. Please accept my sincere condolences for any losses you have experienced.
In 2020, your NMA focused on what we could do vs. that that we could not do. All meetings for the board were held virtually, which our leadership in Lincoln and outstate Nebraska probably appreciated most. Several times this year we advocated on behalf of Nebraska mortgage lenders with our elected officials and in conjunction with the Mortgage Banker’s Association with the GSEs. I can assure you, the voice of Nebraska lenders was heard. We were fortunate to have one in-person event over the summer with our annual golf event. While a much smaller evert this year, it was enjoyable for those that participated.
In September, we held our first ever (and I am hoping it is our last) virtual conference. This event was provided free to our members, thanks to our generous sponsors. The event featured a very timely keynote address by Holly Hoffman, a former contestant on the "Survivor" TV show. We presented 105 Champion’s Circle awards, as well as hand-delivering those awards all across our state. We honored Francisco Serrano of Charter West Bank as the 2020 Mortgage Professional of the Year award in our first ever “Publisher’s Clearing House” style award notification. If you missed any of these events, you can find links to watch all the fun on our website. I am looking forward to returning to an in-person conference this fall in Nebraska City, assuming conditions are for that to happen.
While 2020 was painful in so many ways, it did bring a rather successful year for our industry. Based on the volume we were all handling, we elected to limit the number of educational events held. Now that we are masters of the virtual meeting, we will be bringing several educational events in 2021. Please watch for those opportunities!
As I hand off the leadership to Laura Burford, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve you all. With more than two decades in the mortgage industry, I am humbled to have found a career I love and to get the opportunity to lead our state association. The friendships made and experiences afforded will be valued for years to come.
I wish you all a very successful and, most importantly, a healthy and safe 2021. Thank you for your support!
2020 NMA President
